Urgent Implementation of Enhanced Security Measures and Transparent Communication Protocols at School 59
Background:
According to a BPD SVU Detective, an attempted abduction occurred at Charles R. Drew Science Magnet School (School 59). Despite the involvement of the Buffalo Police Department’s Special Victims Unit, there has been a concerning lack of responsiveness and transparency from the Buffalo Public School District regarding this incident. This inaction has left parents, students, and community members alarmed and seeking immediate assurances about the safety of our children.
Our Demands:
We, the undersigned, call upon the Buffalo Public Schools Board of Education and the Buffalo Museum of Science to:
1. Enhance Security Infrastructure:
• Install secure entry systems to prevent unauthorized access.
• Upgrade surveillance systems to ensure comprehensive monitoring of all school premises.
• Establish a centralized security communication hub accessible to Buffalo Public School security personnel for real-time monitoring and response.
2. Improve Communication Protocols:
• Develop and implement a transparent communication strategy to promptly inform parents and guardians about safety incidents and measures taken.
• Ensure regular updates are provided to the community regarding ongoing safety enhancements and protocols.
3. District-Wide Safety Reforms:
• Conduct a comprehensive review of safety and security policies across all schools within the district.
• Implement standardized safety measures to ensure consistent protection for all students.
• Provide training for staff and students on safety protocols and emergency response procedures.
About Bury The Violence:
Bury The Violence is a nonprofit organization founded by Kareema Morris, dedicated to preventing violence through education and community engagement. The organization focuses on assisting in the recovery of missing, runaway, and trafficked teenagers and young adults, advocating for systemic changes to protect vulnerable populations. Kareema Morris’s personal connection to School 59, as both an alumna and a community advocate, underscores the critical need for immediate action to safeguard our students.
Conclusion:
The safety of our children is non-negotiable. We urge the Buffalo Public Schools Board of Education and the Buffalo Museum of Science to take immediate and decisive action to implement the above measures. By doing so, we can restore trust within the community and ensure a secure learning environment for all students.
